Rio Band Families,
We received word this morning that a Rio group has been selected as one of only three HS groups nationally to participate and compete in the Charles Mingus Festival, put on by Mr. Mingus’s widow, Sue Mingus at NYC’s Manhattan School of Music in February. This is the sixth time Rio has been selected for this festival. Rio was chosen as the HS winner in 2013 and 2014.

If you’re not familiar with the music of Charles Mingus, he’s well worth checking out, as his bass playing and (especially) his compositions are among the most important in jazz history. A good album for a Mingus starting point is his 1959 masterpiece “Mingus Ah Um”.

- Optional band picture orders are due no later than this Thursday at lunch. Please make sure to fill out the forms EXACTLY as indicated in my earlier email.
- We had two guest artists join us last week, with amazing results. Kudos to bassists Sierra Contreras and Maddy Hill, who were called into service to play along with Bria Skonberg. They did a fantastic job! Duncan McElman, Nick Augusta and Sean Nelson created impromptu musical magic while sitting in with the Matt Wilson Christmas Tree-O when they visited Rio. Duncan and Sean then sat in with the group during their show at Mondavi Center. What an experience. - Freshman (wow!) Natalie Kowalski has been selected for the CMEA Capitol Section Honor Band. She was in the top five flutes in the entire region. Way to go Natalie!
- This Friday, Dr. Ronald Carter will join us in the band room from 3 to 6-ish PM, to provide a clinic for our AM Jazz Ensemble. Rio students and families are welcome to observe.

Rio Band Families,
Before the Thanksgiving break, Lifetouch took professional photographs of all of our bands, as well as the Japan Trip Concert and Jazz Bands, and a mass photo of all band students. These photos are available for purchase through Lifetouch. I’ll send home order forms this week.
The orders (with all checks made out to LIFETOUCH) will be due no later than next Thursday, December 10th.
If ordering pictures, you must follow these directions exactly, to ensure that you get the correct photos-
On the order form, beneath where it says “All Band Group” and “$13.00,” please write in the name of the group photo(s) you would like to order, using this exact wording:
